I am broadly studying how social media influencers, online communities, and social media businesses in the Asia Pacific are responding to COVID-19 and its impacts. Below are a shortlist of some of my commentaries/refereed journal articles that are forthcoming, under review, or have been commissioned: 1) Understand how East Asian and Australian social media influencers and agencies have adapted their business models or pivoted their contents in different directions in light of COVID-19. Reactions range from 'how can we monetise this tragedy' to 'our entire industry needs to recalibrate because we need to stop promoting travel, luxury, mass consumption'. 2) Understanding how influencers throughout East Asian (especially those who were earliest affected by COVID19) have integrated PSA into their content, especially on YouTube. 3) Understanding how meme factories in Singapore and Malaysia have adapted their content streams in light of COVID19 misinformation. 4) Understanding how an online community of Asian diaspora (~1.7 million members) have been addressing COVID19 related anti-Asian racism and xenophobia together.
