Professor Maher has three decades of international experience in harm reduction and the prevention of infectious disease in key populations, including people who use drugs, sex workers, men who have sex with men and people living with HIV. She has provided technical advice to the WHO, UNAIDS, UNODC, AusAID, DFID, the World Bank, the Global Fund, and the US CDC and has specialist expertise in ethnographic and qualitative research, including participatory and peer-based methods, epidemiology, surveillance, program implementation and evaluation, and service development and delivery. Professor Maher is involved in advocacy and studies assessing the impact of COVID-19 on key populations.
