Extensive experience in T and now NK cell biology. Recently his group at Cartherics have generated Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR) technology to arm T cells to specifically target and kill cancer cells. This has been adapted to developing off-the-shelf iNK cells from induced pluripotential stem cells (iPSC). These cells are very potent killers of cancer cells and are being tested for the ability to kill viral infected target cells. They could be used to rid SARS-CoV-2 infected cells, They are adding specificity to the iNK cells using CAR technology which can also be applied to targeting virus infected cells, They also have experience with anti-inflammatory mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSC). A logical COVID-19 therapy would be the combination of CAR-iNK cells to lyse SARS-CoV-2 infected cells and MSCs to inhibit cytokine storm.
