Distinguished for contributions to dynamic meteorology. His development of the theory of surface pressure changes included the conception of the curvature of air trajectories as a controlling factor. The turbulent heat transfer near the ground was shown to differ from turbulent transfer of other quantities, and the form of temperature profile predicted and confirmed. His studies of large-scale horizontal transfers at high levels have improved understanding of the global heat balance and the mechanism of the general circulation. Contributions have also been made to problems of cumulus motions and large scale subsidence.
