Short citation at year of election

Distinguished for his work in many fields of organic chemistry. Special attention may be drawn to his long and valuable series of papers on the labile nature of the halogen atom in certain classes of organic compounds and to the importance of this work in the development of the modern theories of valency. Macbeth made much use of absorption spectra in structural investigations, both for synthetic material and natural products. His later work has dealt with many aspects of the natural products important in Australia and during the war he planned and supervised the erection and running of plant required for the production of urgently needed therapeutic materials.
