Has made significant contributions to the theory of welded and other metal structures, particularly in the development of a simple plastic theory of the flexure of mild steel, which he derived from his study of the behaviour of continuous stanchions in rigid frame structures and of the plastic design of such structures. He has further successfully tested this theory against full scale structures. He has also devised a satisfactory explanation of the behaviour of compression members in aluminium alloy structures.
