Distinguished for his contributions in the field of experimental embryology, especially for his demonstrations of the phases of development of the vertebrate limb; of the development of cartilage and bone from a common blastema in the repair after fractures; of the effects of vitamin C on countour formation and bone repair after fracture, and of the power of portions of the early chick blastodern to differentiate into blood. 

His researches on the growth and development of bones are collected in a book "Bones", published by Macmillan in 1936. He is also the author of an outstandingly successful textbook of Biology published by Macmillan.
