In his work in charge of plant pathology, plant breeding and genetics at Sydney University he pioneered in Australia, and developed, highly significant work on the life histories and host parasite relationships of the important rust diseases of cereals. He is particularly distinguished for his survey of rust "races" in Australia and the study of the inheritance of host resistances in species of Triticum and their hybrids. Produced successful wheat varieties possessing disease resistance and other valuable characteristics.
