Guidelines for Dedicating a Copper Tile

For a donation of $1000 individuals, families, work colleagues and not-for-profit organisations may dedicate a tile in the name of one of the following.

  1. A scientist, who is (or was):
    • a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science (including Corresponding members) or
    • an Australian citizen or resident who contributed significantly to science or the application of science and technology to the Australian environment, or to social or economic development
  2.  A team of scientists who made a significant contribution
  3. A primary or secondary school teacher who made an impact on a scientist’s career or has received a national award for science teaching.

In submitting the dedication, potential donors should consider the following.

If dedicating to a:

Fellow (living or deceased)

  • Write your dedication of no more than 30 words

  • Include title, full name, and post nominals

  • Provide their field of expertise and year of election as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science

  • Include a brief personal acknowledgement (optional)

  • Link to the Fellow’s Academy of Science citation or biographical memoir.

Non- Fellows

  • In no more than two sentences, describe a scientific accomplishment (such as discovery, invention, or book) directly attributable to the scientist. NOTE: This is separate from your dedication and will assist us in processing your submission.

  • Draft your dedication of no more than 30 words.  Include title, full name, and post nominals.
    Provide links to

    1. a bio or memoir of the individual being dedicated and

    2. a more detailed description of their scientific work.

  • Include a brief personal acknowledgement (optional). Otherwise, the tile will simply state ‘Dedicated by (name of donor)’.

Teacher

  • In no more than two sentences, tell us about the teacher’s impact (normally on the nominator personally) or award (normally a national or international award recognising significant contribution to science teaching from K-12).
  • Draft your dedication of no more than 30 words
  • Include a brief personal acknowledgement (optional). Otherwise, the tile will simply state ‘Dedicated by (name of donor)’.

Prospective donors should check the listing on the campaign website to ensure that their proposed dedication has not already been made, and to view current dedications as a format guideline.

If the proposed dedication is to a living scientist, donors should seek their consent.  If the proposed dedication is to a deceased person, donors should check it, if possible, with the immediate family. This will ensure no unexpected complications.

The Academy reserves the right to decline a donation or dedication (in which case the $1000 will be refunded) or to edit proposed dedications in discussion with the donor.

NOTE: Where a donor provides a link to a website other than the Academy’s, the Academy does not guarantee functional links over the lifetime of the campaign. Please advise us if you discover an issue.
