Academy announces new Council members

The Australian Academy of Science today announced new members of its Council during the Science at the Shine Dome celebrations in Canberra.

Leading researcher in plant gene technology Dr TJ Higgins will join the Academy Council as its Secretary of Biological Sciences, taking over from Professor Marilyn Renfree, an expert in marsupial reproductive biology.

Professors Ian Hume and John Mattick will join the Council as ordinary members for the biological sciences and Professors Sue O'Reilly and Mandyam Srinivasan will join as ordinary members for the physical sciences.

Academy President Professor Andrew Holmes welcomed the new members and thanked those vacating their roles.

The departing Council members include evolutionary biologist Professor Rick Shine, immunologist Professor Ian Frazer and mathematician Professor Nalini Joshi.

The new Council members will officially take up their roles at the end of the Academy's annual general meeting today.
