Message from the Chief Executive—December 2021

December 13, 2021
Ann-Maria Arabia

As the year draws to a close, I would like to thank you all for your continued support of the Academy, whether that is by your generous donations, sharing the work of the Academy, or simply by staying aware of what we are doing by subscribing to this newsletter.

Without doubt, the work of Academy Fellows who dedicate their time and expertise to advance science in Australia and internationally is exceptional. The Fellows are a true national treasure who make possible all of our activities. Over the course of the year, I have had the great privilege of speaking with Fellows daily across so many disciplines and their work continually inspires me. I take this occasion to express my appreciation to all of our Fellows for all that they do.

In the December newsletter you can read about a roundtable hosted by the Academy, along with the Australian Academy of Law, on how the World Heritage Convention should adapt to the challenges posed by climate change. The majority of Australia’s natural World Heritage properties are threatened by climate change, and I encourage you to read the roundtable’s proposals on how science and the law can help navigate this complex area.

This month we continue our annual tradition of the Academy’s Annual Fellows’ Christmas Book and Podcast List, now in its 6th year and featuring recommendations from Australia’s top minds on what to read, listen to, give as a gift, or just relax and wind down with this summer.

And finally, enjoy the highlights of 2021 in our annual wrap up. It has been another big year where we have sought to place science at the service of the nation and to make science available to everyone to navigate the challenges of 2021.

Thank you again for your support through 2021.

I wish you and your loved ones a Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous new year.

Anna-Maria
