Links between research and industry in Taiwan and Australia, and the promotion of science in the general community, were the subject of a visit by a Taiwanese delegation in October.

The Taiwanese Minister of Science and Technology, Dr San-Cheng Chang, was accompanied by Dr Chien Chou, Director General of the science ministry's Department of International Cooperation, Mr Stephen FY Kuo, Counsellor of the Science and Technology Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in Vietnam, and representatives from TECO in Australia.

The Vietnamese delegation met with Academy Vice-President Professor C. Jagadish FAA FTSE, Academy Councillor Professor Brian Schmidt AC FAA FRS, and Director International Programs Nancy Pritchard.

While in Australia Dr Chang also met with the Ministers for Industry and Telecommunications, Ian Macfarlane and Malcolm Turnbull, CSIRO, and the Academy of the Technological Sciences and Engineering.

The Academy and the Ministry of Science and Technology of Taiwan have had an agreement to exchange researchers since 1992. Taiwan continues to send scientists to Australia each year, but due to a lack of funding the Academy has not been able to send Australian researchers to Taiwan since 2011.
