Call for more targeted agricultural research

The Academy has highlighted the importance of agricultural research, development and extension (R,D&E) in response to an issues paper released as part of the development of an Agricultural Competitiveness White Paper. The issues paper was released by the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, along with a series of questions for stakeholders to comment on.

Despite the enormously important role science has played in improving agricultural productivity in Australia, there was very little mention of science or R&D within the issues paper.

In response to the paper, the National Committee for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food developed a submission emphasising the importance of R,D&E in enhancing the future competitiveness and profitability of Australian agriculture.

The Academy’s response drew attention to the declining level of investment in agricultural research and the lack of a quality investment framework. It recommended the development of an overarching strategic research plan to ensure agricultural research is more focused and targeted into the future.
