Science by doing: engaging students with science

Science by Doing is an innovative online science program developed by the Academy with the support of the Australian Government which is free to all Australian students and teachers. It consists of digital curriculum units for students in Years 7 to 10, designed to engage and excite them in their science learning.

The units present contemporary science ideas in an eye-catching way and help students develop their inquiry skills through relevant experiences. The digital components have hundreds of short film clips that help students understand science concepts in a concrete way, while the Student Guide includes engaging, hands-on investigations.

Although the program is still in its development phase, word of its quality has spread. Over one-third of all Australian science teachers have already registered to use the units. A mid-term assessment of the Science by Doing website, in August 2015, found there were nearly 2.7 million interactions (hits). This is twice as many as the previous year, which was 10 times the number received in 2013. With the completion of the program by the end of 2015, the number of teachers using Science by Doing is expected to grow even more in 2016.
