C. A. Hurst won early recognition for his work on relativistic quantum mechanics, in which he showed that the perturbation series obtained by Feynman and Schwinger were divergent. His later published work has been largely concerned with the statistical mechanics of generalized Ising lattices, and has attracted widespread interest. His versatility is shown by isolated contributions of considerable distinction to a wide variety of subjects.
