Survey on STEM career pathways

Science & Technology Australia (STA) has launched a survey to gather robust new evidence on STEM career patterns, talent retention and mobility across the STEM sector.

STA says the survey will be Australia’s most comprehensive snapshot of current conditions and career patterns for people in STEM, and would also like to hear from people who have left STEM careers. Survey results will inform research commissioned by the Office of the Chief Scientist for the Prime Minister’s National Science and Technology Council. The survey closes 14 June.

Looking Back, Moving Forward: The many facets of fire

Fire has been a crucial force in Indigenous communities throughout Australia for thousands of years—for many, it is a sacred element representing a connection to their ancestors, land, and traditional way of life.

Indigenous peoples have used fire as a land management tool for centuries, and Indigenous knowledges continue to inform practice today. Controlled burns can be used to clear brush and undergrowth, promote the growth of new plants, and prevent larger, more destructive wildfires. This helps to maintain the health and diversity of ecosystems, which is crucial for the survival of many species of plants and animals.

Join us for the third event in the 2023 public speaker series to hear from Mr Dean Yibarbuk and Dr Jeremy Russell-Smith as they discuss fire from a range of perspectives.

Date: Thursday 13 June
Time: 5.30pm – 7.00pm AEST
Venue: The Shine Dome in Canberra, and online

Supporting science

Since the Academy’s creation by Royal Charter in 1954, the first donations received by our Founders assisted towards the foundation of the Endowment Fund—allowing the Academy to establish its independence.

With further support from our Fellows, donors and friends, we have been able to develop and implement a breadth of programs and activities that are now sewn into the fabric of Australian science.

Today, we continue to uphold this legacy and donations play an important role in ensuring science informs decisions wherever they are made, the continuation of building capabilities, nurturing early- and mid-career researchers who are shaping the science sector, and contributing to national and international challenges.

To learn more about giving to the Academy visit our website or contact Kate Groves on (02) 6201 9460 or kate.groves@science.org.au

We hope you will consider supporting the Academy and our vision for excellence in science.
