In 2019, the Academy together with 3M provided an opportunity for leading secondary students and their teachers involved in the NSW Science Extension course to apply for and attend Science at the Shine Dome. This was achieved through the establishment of a STEM education initiative, the Science at the Shine Dome Schools Program.
The inaugural program enabled 10 New South Wales’ Year 12 Science Extension students and their teachers to attend the Academy’s annual flagship event.
The goal of this new program was to engage, inform and inspire school students and teachers in the ideas and initiatives underway in solving local, national and global challenges. It highlighted how the work of science and research is relevant to our lives, how students and teachers might be involved, and why science matters now and into our futures.
“My experience of Science at the Shine Dome was completely invaluable—not only for purposes of my own academic growth—but also socially, and personally…For the scientists…this is your career. This is what you do. This is your normal. But for us students, in the last few days we have been exposed to an entirely new scientific world in which we can only hope to be a part of in the future.”
April Abela, Science Extension Student Glenmore Park High School
3M supported the program through funding and engagement events including virtual Q&A sessions, talks, dinner attendance and gifts. Through its partnership with the Academy, 3M demonstrated its commitment to supporting STEM education in Australia and to scientific innovation.
The 3M brand was recognised and aligned across Science at the Shine Dome and within specific elements of the Schools Program. 3M’s support had an immediate and significant impact on the lives of students and teachers in Australia now and into the future.
“3M is very proud to have been part of Science at the Shine Dome 2019. We are grateful for the opportunity to support the Schools Program and I must say quite strongly that we were thoroughly impressed by the organisation of the event. A big congratulations to the Australian Academy of Science for this wonderful achievement. Our partnership is invaluable to assist us in building our brand in Australia in a way that tells our science and innovation story.”
