Academy opportunities

Theo Murphy Initiative

Applications are now open to Australian early- and mid-career researchers (EMCRs) for the Theo Murphy Initiative (Australia) 2023–24 grant program.

The Theo Murphy Initiative was established by the Royal Society to further scientific discovery among early- and mid-career researchers. The fund is administered by the Australian Academy of Science and provides grant funding to support career development opportunities for Australia’s EMCRs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

Applications close at 5.00pm AEST on 6 November 2023.

Japan Society for the Promotion of Science Postdoctoral Fellowships 2024

The Australian Academy of Science invites applications from Australian researchers for the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Postdoctoral Fellowships 2024.

The JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowships for Research in Japan provides opportunities for Australian postdoctoral researchers to conduct cooperative research with leading research groups in universities and other Japanese institutions, under the guidance of their Japanese hosts. The program aims to help such researchers advance their own work, while contributing to the advancement of research in Japan and the counterpart countries.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified researchers in any field of the physical sciences, life sciences, engineering, technology, and medicine. Strongly desirable and desirable research sub-fields are listed on the Academy’s application website.

Application close at 5.00pm AEDT Monday 15 January 2024.

External opportunities

Amelia Earhart Fellowship

Zonta International offers Amelia Earhart Fellowships to promote more women in the field of aerospace science and engineering. The Fellowships, of US$10,000, are awarded annually to 30 talented women, pursuing PhD or doctoral degrees in aerospace-applied science or aerospace-applied engineering around the globe.

Applications close 15 November 2023.

Order of Australia

In June, six Fellows of the Australian Academy of Science were recognised for their outstanding contributions to science by receiving an Order of Australia in the 2023 King's Birthday Honours List.

Recognition through the Order of Australia is highly regarded and is often cited as being an advantage to career progression. It allows for the celebration of recipients, and their achievements and impacts in our community, and as a motivator for continued contribution.

For the first time, 2023 saw gender parity across all the Order of Australia levels, reflecting the demography of Australia. To enable diversity in all its forms, it is critical that the pool of nominations are diverse.

Anyone can nominate someone for recognition in the Order of Australia, as long as the nominee is an Australian citizen or permanent resident, and nominations can be submitted at any time.
