The ISC Regional Focal Point for Asia and the Pacific (RFP-AP) marked a milestone in early September with a highly impactful week in Canberra strengthening regional collaboration, leadership and academic development across Asia and the Pacific.

A key highlight was the launch of Round Two of the Asia‑Pacific Academic Mentoring Program, building on the success of the 2024 pilot initiative. This year the program saw a notable expansion, welcoming early-career researchers from Vietnam, Thailand and the Philippines alongside participants from Pacific Island nations. The cohort more than doubled in size, bringing together 21 early-career researchers from across the region and 21 senior Australian academics committed to fostering the next generation of scientific leaders.

Dynamic environment

Held alongside Science at the Shine Dome – the Australian Academy of Science’s flagship event – the launch of Round Two provided a dynamic environment for mentorship and learning. Mentees had the opportunity to meet their mentors face-to-face, set meaningful intentions for their partnerships, and immerse themselves in a celebration of scientific excellence as the 2025 Fellows were formally admitted to the Academy.

The experience proved to be both enriching and inspiring for all involved. Participants gained valuable insights, built lasting professional networks and left empowered. The program continues to play a crucial role in building research capacity, leadership and regional cohesion.

Government support

The RFP-AP is grateful to the Australian Government for supporting this important initiative, as well as to our distinguished guests: H.E. Antonio A. Morales, Ambassador of the Philippines to Australia; H.E. Mr Robert Sisilo, Ambassador of the Solomon Islands; and Mr Khoi Bui Viet, Counsellor and Head of Science & Technology Office, Embassy of Vietnam in Australia, who attended the launch.

We look forward to supporting this remarkable group of scholars and mentors over the next 12 months as they collaborate, grow, and lead in shaping the future of science in the region.

The 2025 mentee cohort.
