Australian physicist and Fellow to lead International Physics Union

November 12, 2014

Academy Fellow and Physicist Professor Bruce McKellar has been appointed President of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP).

Professor McKellar was elected President-Designate at the IUPAP General Assembly in London in 2011 but took up the position formally last week at the Union's General Assembly in Singapore.

He is the first Australian President of this leading international physics organisation—and its first President from the southern hemisphere.

IUPAP was formed in 1922 to assist in the worldwide development of physics, to foster international cooperation, and to help apply physics to solving the big problems facing humanity.

Professor McKellar has been an Academy Fellow for more than 20 years and has been its Secretary of Physical Sciences, Vice-President, and Foreign Secretary. He is also a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Physics, the Institute of Physics (UK) and the American Physical Society, and is an Honorary Professorial Fellow of Melbourne University.
