The President of the Helmholtz Association of Germany, Professor Jürgen Mlynek, made a visit to the Academy while in Australia recently. He was accompanied by directors of several Helmholtz Centres.
The Helmholtz Association is Germany’s largest research organisation with an annual budget of 3.8 billion euros. It consists of 18 research centres working in research fields such as physics, space research, materials, marine technology, new forms of energy, neuroscience and environmental science.
The 12-member delegation was accompanied by Academy Fellow Professor Hans Bachor on its two week tour of Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne to learn more about our science and research and to raise the Helmholtz Association's profile in Australia.
The Academy convened a meeting for the delegation in Canberra attended by representatives of the Australian Research Council, The National Health and Medical Research Council, the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, the Department of Education, the Australian National University and the Group of Eight, to discuss ways in which the Helmholtz Association could increase its linkages with Australia.
While in Melbourne, Professor Mlynek and the Helmholtz delegation also met with Academy President Professor Andrew Holmes at the University of Melbourne.
