Australian Academy of Science President, Professor Suzanne Cory, today welcomed the announcement of the new Rudd Cabinet and called on the Government to show strategic leadership for an innovation-led economy.
"While the loss of many talented members from the Gillard team is regrettable, the Australian Academy of Science welcomes the announcement of a new Rudd cabinet," Professor Cory said.
"As past Minister for Innovation, Industry, Science and Research and senior member of Cabinet, we look forward to working once more with Senator Kim Carr and hope the decision to reinstate the science portfolio to Cabinet level will bring strength and strategy in Australia’s approach to research.
"The Academy is very pleased that Minister Plibersek retains the Health portfolio, with a specific focus on medical research - this will hopefully strengthen medical research and its translation into improved clinical and health interventions."
"We also look forward to working with Education Minister Bill Shorten and Environment and Climate Change Minister Mark Butler," Professor Cory said.
"Though his tenure was brief, outgoing Science Minister Don Farrell showed great enthusiasm for the portfolio and we thank him for that commitment."
Professor Cory will outline the Australian Academy of Science’s strategic vision for Australia’s future innovation economy at her National Press Club address this Wednesday, 3 July.
