Top Australian science teachers to mingle with leading scientists

May 28, 2013

Teachers will hear about the latest in discovery and innovation and engage in a hands-on professional learning program at the Australian Academy of Science’s annual three-day celebration, Science at the Shine Dome in Canberra.

The Academy’s annual teachers’ program offers award-winning educators from around Australia the unique opportunity to meet the nation’s highest-calibre scientists, and to hear about cutting-edge science across the disciplines.

The program will feature a visit to the Chemistry Teaching Lab and the Physics Oliphant Building at the Australian National University (ANU). While visiting the ANU campus, the teachers will learn from top chemists about the science of making ice-cream with liquid nitrogen, and hear about lasers and matter in the universe from leading physics researchers.

The teachers will also be given a tour of the John Curtin School of Medical Science by neuroscientist, Dr Madeleine Nicol.

Science at the Shine Dome teacher delegates will meet the Academy’s Science by Doing and Primary Connections teams and experience a sneak preview of new digital curriculum units under development. Science by Doing and Primary Connections – the innovative secondary and primary education programs - support teachers to engage students with hands-on, inquiry-based science.

The winner of the 2012 Prime Minister’s Prize for Excellence in Science in Secondary Teaching Award, Anita Trenwith, will share her experiences establishing annual science shows at primary schools and agriculture classes that run on site at a working farm.

Also participating in the program are the eight winners of the 2013 Academy Teachers’ Awards, from each state and territory. The winners will share their winning experiments to engage students and demonstrate the wonders of science and mathematics. View the winning entries on the Science by Doing page.
