Former Academy president and leading plant scientist dies

Dr Lloyd Evans Former Academy President Dr Lloyd Evans passed away this week in Canberra, aged 87.

Dr Evans was a highly distinguished plant scientist whose research focused on the physiology of flowering. He worked at the California Institute of Technology before becoming a research scientist at the CSIRO Division of Plant Industry. During his time there he was the biologist in charge of the establishment of CERES, the controlled environment research facility known as the phytotron.

He was elected to the Academy’s Fellowship in 1971 and went on to serve as its President from 1978 to 1982. He also served on the Academy’s Council, several sectional committees and as its Vice President.

Dr Evans was elected to the Royal Society in 1976 and recieved an Order of Australia for service to science.
