This position is part of a Secretariat who work as a team to support activities undertaken by the Academy.

About the Role

The Academy leads and supports a range of activities for Early- and Mid-Career Researchers (EMCRs).

The EMCR Forum is the national voice of Australia's emerging scientists, representing researchers who are up to 15 years post-PhD (or other research higher degree), irrespective of their professional appointment or their discipline or research. The EMCR Forum's mission is to champion improvement in the national research environment through advocacy. Some of the main areas of focus for the EMCR Forum are sustainable and transparent career structures, gender equity, stable funding policies, career development opportunities, and raising awareness of issues facing the future of science.

The EMCR Forum is supported by the Academy which provides secretariat and other support for the Forum and its activities. This is a key strategic activity of the Academy and underpins its commitment to support diversity and excellence in science and empower the next generation of scientists. This position leads the provision of this support and delivery of this key strategic activity.

The EMCR Program Manager works collaboratively and flexibly within the Academy’s Diversity & Inclusion team and supports the work of the team more broadly to advance diversity and inclusion within the Academy. This position is full-time and available on a 3-year fixed term contract with the possibility of extension.

Duties and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director, Diversity and Inclusion, and working with the other members of the Diversity and Inclusion team and the broader Academy secretariat and Fellowship:

  1. Provide and facilitate policy and strategic advice to support the Academy’s Early- and Mid-Career Researcher (EMCR) Forum in their mission to improve the national research environment through advocacy.

  2. Support the professional development of Australia’s EMCRs though the provision of world class activities and opportunities.

  3. Oversee strategic communication activities relevant to EMCRs via website, email updates and newsletters.

  4. Deliver and provide strategic direction of the Theo Murphy (Australia) Initiative Funds program activities.

  5. Support and progress actions of relevant committees, including the EMCR Committee of Council and the Royal Society (Australia) Board.

  6. Work across teams in the Academy to align and integrate EMCR activities with broader Academy events and engagement opportunities

  7. Assist and contribute to other Diversity and Inclusion Section and Academy activities as required.

Qualifications and Experience

Desirable

  • A university qualification or previous experience in communications, policy and/or research.
  • Experience working in or with the Higher Education sector
  • Event management experience a plus
  • Commitment to inclusion and willingness to expand knowledge of STEM in Australia, and diversity and inclusion issues.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage or coordinate consultative projects with multiple stakeholders
  • Ability to apply high-level analysis and critical thinking to deliver outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage and harness support from internal and external stakeholders
  • Well-developed oral and written communication skills
  • Initiative and self-motivation, including the ability to manage multiple tasks and competing deadlines
  • Capacity to manage complex relationships
  • A commitment to workplace diversity and inclusion, workplace participation, WHS and equity principles.
