Australia to host International Day at Lindau

Australian participants at Lindau 2013

As a result of the Academy’s long-standing relationship with the Council for the Lindau National Laureate Meetings, Australia has been invited to host the International Day at the 64th Lindau Nobel Laureates Meetings in Germany on 30 June. The International Day offers an exceptional educational, research and science diplomacy opportunity for Australia to display its achievements on the world stage.

Since 2004 the Academy has been supporting small groups of young Australian researchers to attend the meetings in Lindau, where they can interact and network with 30 to 35 Nobel Laureates in a particular discipline and approximately 600 peers from around the world. The discipline of medicine/physiology will be the focus of the 2014 meeting.

International Day begins with a scientific breakfast aimed at stimulating discussion and setting the tone for the day’s events. During the breakfast, Professor Suzanne Cory will chair a panel discussion of the topic of ‘Women in science’.

The evening program will include lectures given by one or more of Australia’s Nobel Laureates; a cultural component; and an Australian themed menu, providing the opportunity to showcase Australian food and wine. Approximately 850 guests, including early career researchers, Nobel Laureates, members of the Lindau Council and members of the world’s media will attend.

The Academy greatly appreciates the support of the International Day sponsors in this ambitious undertaking: the Department of Industry, Group of Eight, Department of Education, Austrade, CSIRO and the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO).
