For more than a decade, the Academy has collaborated with the US National Science Foundation (NSF) to bring US science and engineering students to Australia through the East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes program - EAPSI Australia .The students visit Australia for eight weeks during the American summer to undertake research and build relationships with their Australian counterparts.
Other countries participating in EAPSI are China, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Singapore, and Taiwan, and students must choose their destination when preparing their applications. Competition for Australia's 20 annual fellowships is tough: Australia is the first choice destination for the majority of applicants: in 2013 more than 25% put Australia first.
The program is co-funded by NSF and the Australian Department of Education. As a result of additional funding from the Department of Education in 2014, its 11th year, the EAPSI program will welcome 25 fellows to Australia, and in 2015 30 EAPSI Australia fellowships will be awarded.
A list of the students participating, and their corresponding hosts, is available here. An orientation program will be hosted in Canberra by the Academy from 24–26 June, with a series of talks and site visits to cultural institutions, including the National Museum of Australia, Parliament House and Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve.
