German, Australian research organisations find common ground

The President of the Helmholtz Association of Germany, Professor Jürgen Mlynek, made a visit to the Academy while in Australia recently. He was accompanied by directors of several Helmholtz Centres.

The Helmholtz Association is Germany’s largest research organisation with an annual budget of €3.8 billion. Its 18 research centres work in a range of research fields, including physics, space research, materials, marine technology, new forms of energy, neuroscience and environmental science.

The 12-member delegation was accompanied by Academy Fellow and Chair of the National Committee for Physics Professor Hans Bachor AM FAA on its two week tour of Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne to learn more about science and research in Australia and to raise the Helmholtz Association's profile.

The Academy convened a meeting for the delegation in Canberra attended by representatives of the Australian Research Council, the National Health and Medical Research Council, the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation, the Department of Education, the Australian National University and the Group of Eight, to discuss ways in which the Helmholtz Association could increase its links with Australia.

While in Melbourne, the delegation also met with Academy President Professor Andrew Holmes AM PresAA FRS FTSE.
