Science at the Shine Dome

Every year, Australia’s foremost scientists gather at Science at the Shine Dome. Prestigious awards are presented, high achievers are admitted to the Fellowship of the Australian Academy of Science, and a special program of events for EMCRs aims to enthuse and educate young researchers.

This year’s EMCR program offers you the opportunity to build new skills by attending workshops and be inspired by talks from new Fellows of the Academy and award winners. The program covers all fields of science over two days, with day three devoted to a symposium—Life on the loose: species invasion and control.

There are four great workshops to attend: Learn how to perfect your grant writing skills, or how to use storytelling to communicate your research. Tim Dean, Science and Technology Editor at the Conversation will teach you how to pitch your research to the media or you can learn the skills needed to partner with industry.

And make sure you register to attend the private reception for EMCRs to network with Fellows of the Academy. Find your inspiration for 2017 at Science at the Shine Dome: more information and registration.

Date: 23-25 May 2017
Venue: The Shine Dome, Gordon Street, Canberra ACT 2601
Registration: 3-Day EMCR Package $500 or single day registration options available

Eureka Prizes

Known as the ‘Oscars of Australian science,’ the Australian Museum Eureka Prizes celebrate research and innovation, leadership, science engagement and school science. The Emerging Leader in Science award is specifically for an ECR within five years of receiving their PhD, and you may also be eligible for one of the other discipline-specific awards. Nominations close Friday 5 May. Finalists will be announced online on 28 July, and winners at a gala dinner on 30 August.

Australian Academy of Science Awards 2018 now open

Did you know that many of the Academy’s prestigious awards are for EMCRs? There are awards for researchers in chemistry, earth sciences, mathematics, biology and many other fields. Have a look at the honorific awards to discover if any of them suit you or other exceptional researchers you know.

Help us to also recognise science leaders who are making amazing contributions to Australian science by nominating them. The closing date for award nominations is 20 April. The Academy also offers travel, conference and research support, and applications for these are open until 1 June. Read more about our awards and the Academy’s opportunities for scientists here.

Falling Walls Lab Australia

Up to 25 contestants will be invited to participate in the Australian leg of the Falling Walls Lab challenge in September. The challenge involves a three-minute presentation on their research, business model or initiative based on the ‘Which walls will fall next’ concept. Researchers, postdocs, students, entrepreneurs, engineers and innovators performing research in any field of the natural sciences, including technology, engineering and medicine, as well as social sciences and humanities, are eligible to apply. Find out more information and apply by 12 June. The winner of the Australian event will be sponsored to attend the worldwide finals in Berlin in November.

There’s still time to enter Top 5 Under 40

UNSW and ABC RN are currently accepting applications to find the Top 5 Under 40. The nationwide search is open to early-career researchers with a PhD, who are under the age of 40, working in STEMM fields, and who have a flair and passion for communicating their vital work. The winners will undertake a ten-day residency in Sydney at ABC RN. They will receive training in the craft of radio and TV interviews, get a rare ‘behind-the-scenes’ insight into the ABC and work with some of Australia’s best science journalists. Apply before 21 April.
