Winner announced for Crystallography photo comp

May 08, 2014

A winner has been announced for the Australian satellite of the International photo-competition Crystallography in Everyday Life.

The winning photograph by Graziano Lolli.

Graziano Lolli from Italy won the first prize in the Australian competition with a photo of romanesco broccoli (pictured here).

The competition coincides with the International Year of Crystallography and was organised by the International Union of Crystallography and Agilent Technologies.

Amateur and professional photographers were asked to submit images that capture the spirit of crystallography in everyday places, objects and experiences.

Over 130 images were submitted and 25 were shortlisted by a selection committee. The finalists were then displayed on poster boards at last month’s Society of Crystallographers in Australia and New Zealand (SCANZ) Conference, or Crystal29, where delegates were asked to select their favourite images.

Mr Lolli will receive A$500 for his photo, donated through sponsorship by SCANZ.

Fifteen of the best images chosen at Crystal 29 will now form part of a travelling exhibition around Australia. This event has been co-sponsored by the Australian Academy of Science’s National Committee of Crystallography and SCANZ.

The international competition is still open, all photographers are invited to enter. Entries close 31 May.

A list of dates and locations for the travelling exhibition will be available on the National Committees website soon.
