Submissions are now open for the 2015 Mike Smith Student Prize — an award recognising research into Australia’s scientific and environmental history.
The National Museum of Australia and the Australian Academy of Science through its National Committee for History and Philosophy of Science host the prize, named after Australian archaeologist and Museum Senior Research Fellow Mike Smith.
A $3000 first prize will be awarded for the best essay by a postgraduate or undergraduate student that deals with any aspect of the history of Australian science (including medicine and technology) or Australian environmental history.
The winning entry may also be considered for publication in Historical Records of Australian Science. The prize is judged by the chair of the National Committee for History and Philosophy of Science, the editor of Historical Records of Australian Science and National Museum’s Head of Research.
Last year the first prize went to Christina Dyson for her essay Living fossils and mouth-watering stones: manipulating history in the post-WWII natural Australian plant garden.
The deadline for submissions is 30 September 2014.
