A Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science has been re-elected as Secretary General of the International Council for Science (ICSU).
Professor David Black AO was re-elected at the Council’s general assembly today in New Zealand after having served as its leader since 2011.
The International Council for Science is a non-government organisation with a global membership of national scientific bodies and international science unions. It plans and coordinates research to address major issues of relevance to science and society.
Academy president Professor Andrew Holmes congratulated Professor Black on his re-election, saying the Secretary General has done exemplary work promoting the mission of the Council to scientific communities and the general public.
Professor Black was elected as an Academy Fellow in 2011 for his work in organic chemistry and leadership in scientific diplomacy.
His second term as Secretary General of ICSU will expire in 2017.
The rest of the executive team elected today includes Professor Daya Reddy as President-elect, Professor Li Jignhai as Vice-President for Scientific Planning and Review, Professor Michael Clegg as Vice-President for External Relations, and Dr Barbara Erazmus as Treasurer.
Professor John Buckeridge has also been elected to the ICSU Executive Board as an Ordinary Member.
