The Australian Academy of Science is seeking an experienced and passionate Drupal Web Developer to contribute to crafting cutting-edge digital experiences for a range of audiences including in the important fields of science and mathematics education and research.

You will play a key role in translating our pre-eminent national education programs into transformational digital experiences by combining your technical expertise with human centred design and effective digital strategy and tools. About the organisation

The Australian Academy of Science is an independent, not-for-profit organisation established by Royal Charter in 1954 with an elected Fellowship of over 520 leading Australian scientists. The Academy celebrates and supports excellence in Australian science, promotes international scientific engagement, builds public awareness and understanding of science and provides independent, authoritative and influential scientific advice. This is a key position within an ICT team; part of a broader Secretariat of 80 people who work to support activities undertaken by the Academy.

Canberra-based, full-time, 18-month fixed term with strong possibility of extension.

The full-time salary to be offered is at the Academy classification:

In addition to the 9.5% Superannuation Guarantee, the Academy pays an additional 7.5% contribution to superannuation (for a total of 17%). Alternatively, employees may choose to take the additional 7.5% as base salary. Conditions include flexible working hours, an employee assistance program, options to salary sacrifice, annual leave loading and paid Christmas holiday stand down.

Position Description

The primary responsibility of the Drupal Web Developer is to provide full-stack development and maintenance of the Academy’s websites. The successful candidate will create custom solutions in Drupal 7/8 for delivering Academy content for a broad online audience with the goal of supporting our impact. The appointee will work closely with our product managers, web developers, graphic designers, content creators, and other Academy staff to ensure the development of high quality digital websites and content.

Selection criteria

Prerequisite

  • Diploma or bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering or related technical field, or equivalent work experience.

Essential

  1. Demonstrated experience in front-end web development
    • 3+ years’ experience writing clean, hand-coded HTML, Javascript and CSS in consumer-facing web applications.
    • Experience with client-side CSS and Javascript libraries such as bootstrap and JQuery.
    • Excellent mastery of web standards, cross-browser compatibility, and building in accessibility and responsive design from the ground up.
  2. Demonstrated experience in back-end web development
    • Experience in writing clean, hand-coded PHP.
    • 2+ years’ developing/theming websites in Drupal 7/8
  3. Demonstrated experience in web development documentation, tools and processes
    • Experience in participating and maintaining Github repositories, including creating and merging branches through pull requests
    • Experience in writing legible, reusable code to be understood by all team members, (example: BEM nomenclature), and providing accompanying documentation
  4. Excellent written and oral communication skills with a solid understanding of English and demonstrated capacity to pay strong attention to detail.
  5. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a small and agile team and the ability to relate effectively with a range of people across all levels of the organisation.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Conduct problem-solving, development and implementation of the web-based technical solutions to meet the functional needs of internal clients.  This includes:
    • Source, configure, extend or custom build Drupal modules to provide the required functionality.
    • Design and develop functions that utilise restful and soap application programming interfaces to enhance functionality and implement connectivity between the Academy’s strategic software.
    • Drupal 7/8 theming and site building.
  • Develop new user-facing features utilising Javascript, Ajax, JQuery, HTML, CSS, PHP and associated libraries.
  • Manage and perform maintenance on the Academy websites on a routine basis to ensure that:
    • The sites are regularly updated and performance is maintained.
    • Module, theme and core or minor security patches are implemented.
  • Manage, prioritise and implement daily web requests to ensure timely and accurate web content updates, including drafting and scheduling website content.
  • Contribute to planning and implementing website maintenance, improvements, reviews and redesigns, and liaise with internal business arears on web projects and activities.
  • Provide advice and support for Academy ICT/SRM/WEB related requests and technical issues including liaising with service providers as required.
  • Perform other duties as required, including sharing duties with other staff from time to time.
