Australian Academy of Science President Professor Suzanne Cory today urged the Federal Government to defend Australia's economic productivity, public health and environment by properly investing in science research and education.

"Australia is a world leader in many scientific fields, but we can't rest on our reputation or remain competitive without ongoing Government commitment," Professor Cory said.

The Australian Academy of Science is particularly concerned about indications that the Government intends to cut medical research in the May Budget.

Venom breathing dragons, snails joining the fight against cancer and the population challenges for Australia are just some of the exciting topics on offer at the Australian Academy of Science's annual celebration, Science at the Shine Dome, from 4 – 6 May.

This feast of science research will bring over 300 delegates to Canberra to showcase the achievements of Australia's brightest minds.

Seventeen scientists from all fields of science will be admitted as Fellows of the Academy and will speak on their ground-breaking research, including on:

La Trobe University Professor, Marilyn Anderson, will explain how plants practise safe sex at the Australian Academy of Science's annual celebration, Science at the Shine Dome, being held in Canberra from 4 – 6 May.

She is one of three women amongst the 17 top scientists being admitted as new Fellows of the Academy this year, for their significant contributions to advancing the world's scientific knowledge.

Leading Australian researchers will next week be honoured for their outstanding work in areas as diverse as changing what we know about the Milky Way, the evolution of venomous dragons, and using slugs and snails to create new anticancer drugs.

The Australian Academy of Science will present its highest awards to eminent scientists for contributions to their fields.

Experts and opinion leaders from Australia and around the world will come together in Canberra next week to explore strategies to deal with a bigger Australian population, and its potential impact on agriculture, the environment, human health and the economy.

The Australian Academy of Science Symposium, Australia 2050: Population challenges to sustainability, will be held at the Shine Dome, Canberra, on 6 May 2011.

The Australian Academy of Science today called on the Federal Government to demonstrate its commitment to Australia's future by continuing to increase its investment in scientific research, and by supporting school science education and international scientific collaboration.

Professor Mahananda Dasgupta, a new Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, speaks with passion about women in physics and science.

She is no newcomer to the subject, having paved the way for other women.

Professor Dasgupta is one of three women amongst the 17 top Australian scientists being admitted as new Fellows of the Academy this year.

She took part in the ‘Adopt a physicist’ program of the Australian Institute of Physics from 1995 onwards, to raise awareness about physics in schools. She continues to speak in schools on her own initiative.
