The best young Australian scientists will have the chance to be mentored by Nobel Prize winners, thanks to a new collaboration between the Australian Academy of Science and the Science and Industry Endowment Fund. Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills, Science and Research, Senator the Hon. Chris Evans, today announced funding support for the Science and Industry Endowment Fund – Australian Academy of Science Fellowships to the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings.

Nobel Prize winner and Australian Academy of Science Council member, Professor Brian Schmidt, will captivate politicians and scientists alike with a special Master class in Astronomy at Parliament House tonight.

It will mark the launch of the new Parliamentary Friends of Science Group, a forum for engagement and dialogue between parliamentarians and scientists in Australia.

Strong science education is the key to ensuring that we have a solid position in the Asian Century, Australian Academy of Science President Professor Suzanne Cory today told a high-level international science gathering in China. Professor Cory was speaking at a forum held during the Academy of Sciences for Developing Countries General Conference in Tianjin, China.

The Australian Academy of Science’s recently established Early-Mid Career Researcher Forum will hold its first national meeting today, to discuss the future of Australian science.

The Australian Academy of Science’s science education program for primary schools, PrimaryConnections, is releasing 10 new units this week, fully aligned to the national science curriculum. Each of these eagerly awaited units has undergone a rigorous process, designed by education professionals and reviewed by at least three Fellows of the Academy, and is supported by teacher background information for each lesson to help explain the science to the teacher.

UK Government Chief Scientific Adviser, Professor Sir John Beddington will highlight how to bring science to the forefront of government policy, at an Australian Academy of Science public lecture at the Shine Dome today.

Sir John has made the ‘perfect storm’ of food, energy and water security in the context of climate change a priority for governments internationally.

Advanced materials from wild silk protein, targeted nano-medicines to treat autoimmune diseases and the energy source of active galaxies are among the research ideas honoured with 49 new Australia-India Fellowships awarded by the Australian Academy of Science today. The Australian fellowship recipients have been selected from a competitive pool to work with leading Indian research institutions,” said Academy President, Professor Suzanne Cory.

The Australian Academy of Science today welcomed the Federal Government’s announcement of the medical research grants awarded by the National Health and Medical Research Council for the coming year.
