The Early and Mid Career Researcher Forum (the Forum) of the Australian Academy of Science today published working guidelines to ensure that women and men have equal opportunities to pursue a successful career in science.

The Australian Academy of Science today welcomed the appointment of the Hon. Dr Craig Emerson MP as the new Portfolio Minister and Senator the Hon. Don Farrell as the new Minister for Science and Research. Dr Emerson has taken on the Tertiary Education, Skills, Science and Research portfolio, while Senator Farrell becomes Minister for Science and Research. The Academy also welcomes the promotion of Sharon Bird MP to Minister for Higher Education and Skills.

The changes were announced today as part of Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s Cabinet reshuffle.

A contributor to discoveries at the large hadron collider at CERN, the researcher who determined the molecular mechanism behind coral bleaching, and a leader in human disease gene-mapping are among 20 new Fellows to be elected to the Australian Academy of Science in 2013.

Representing leading research scientists from institutions around Australia, the Australian Academy of Science annually honours a small number of Australian scientists with election to the Academy for their outstanding contributions to science.

The Australian Academy of Science today welcomed the release of Australia’s Satellite Utilisation Policy as an important step in the nation’s journey into space.

Academy Secretary for Science Policy Professor Bob Williamson said the Policy, released today by Senator the Hon Kate Lundy, Minister Assisting for Industry and Innovation, was a great example of Government, science and industry working together to build an innovative Australia.

Australian Academy of Science President, Professor Suzanne Cory today expressed grave concern over reports today rates of immunisation are so low in some areas of Australia that there is a risk that contagious diseases will spread. The National Health Performance Authority report released today revealed that while Australia has high immunisation rates by world standards, more than 77,000 Australian children have not been immunised.

"It's concerning that so many children remain unprotected," Professor Cory said.

Four Indonesian educators on behalf of Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organisation (SEAMEO)for Quality Improvement of Teachers and Education Personnel (QITEP) in science are currently visiting the Australian Academy of Science in Canberra to work with the Science by Doing team.

The visit is part of a collaborative Indonesian-Australian pilot project, Promoting Real Australian Indonesian Science Education (PRAISE), that’s funded by the Australian Government.

One science teacher from every Australian state and territory has won the opportunity to mingle with the nation's most outstanding scientists, hear about the latest in discovery and innovation, and engage in a hands-on professional learning program at the Australian Academy of Science's annual three-day celebration, Science at the Shine Dome.

The teachers will attend the event as winners of a nationwide competition for educators who use simple hands-on experiments and activities to engage students and demonstrate the wonders of science and mathematics.

To celebrate World Immunisation Week (20-27 April) the Australian Academy of Science, in conjunction with The Pharmacy Guild of Australia, has distributed copies of The Science of Immunisation: Questions and Answers to approximately 5000 pharmacies around Australia.

The World Health Organisation’s goal for World Immunisation Week is to dispel myths about immunisation, and better communicate the health benefits of vaccination and the dangers of not immunising children.
