Academy President, Professor Suzanne Cory, today extended her warm congratulations to all six Fellows recognised in the Australia Day Honours. Professor Brian Schmidt was made Companion (AC) in the General Division of the Order of Australia; Officer (AO) in the General Division of the Order of Australia honours went to Professors Robert Graham Clark, Peter Hall, Marilyn Renfree and George Ernest Rogers, and; Professor Michael Dopita was made Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia.

The Governor-General, Ms Quentin Bryce AC CVO today launched the Academy’s new book, Negotiating our future: Living scenarios for Australia to 2050.

Developed by a team of 35 social and natural scientists led by Dr Michael Raupach, the book proposes tools to steer Australia’s approaches to long-term economic, social and environmental sustainability.

“This is a project of vision and courage; it extends our boundaries and allows Australia to take control of how it approaches the future,” said Academy President, Professor Suzanne Cory.

The Australian Academy of Science invites applications from Australian early career researchers for theFrance-Australia Science Innovation Collaboration (FASIC) Program Early Career Fellowships. Closing date is COB Tuesday 2 April 2013.

Meteorologist Professor John Zillman has shaped science and innovation policy in Australia and internationally, and contributed significantly to raising global awareness of climate change. He became a Fellow of the Academy in 2006.

The Australian Academy of Science President and distinguished cancer researcher Professor Suzanne Cory has become the first Australian to be admitted to the Japanese Academy.

Professor Cory is currently visiting Japan to formally be admitted as one of only 27 Honorary Members. The Japanese Academy acknowledged Professor Cory’s work, stating: “[Professor Cory’s] devotion to encourage young researchers of the world and Japan has been highly significant and enlightening”.

The Australian Academy of Science invites Expressions of Interest from junior scientists who are no more than 30 years of age, to visit the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the US.

The AMA is this week mailing 7500 copies of the Australian Academy of Science publication, The Science of Immunisation: Questions and Answers, to general practitioners in every State and Territory.

AMA President, Dr Steve Hambleton, said today that it is vital that parents have easy access to the most authoritative information and evidence in support of immunisation.

"Vaccination is one of the great success stories of modern medicine and public health," Dr Hambleton said.

The Australian Academy of Science, on behalf of the Australian Government Department of Industry, Innovation, Climate Change, Science, Research and Tertiary Education (DIICCSRTE) invites applications from Australian researchers wishing to establish or enhance collaborative projects with their German counterparts.

The Australian Government is providing up to AUD170,000 in 2013-2014 with matched funding being provided by the German Government.
