The Australian Academy of Science today announced the election of 21 leaders in Australian science to its Fellowship, including those working on how galaxies and stars are formed, epilepsy prevention and quantum teleportation.

The new Fellows have been elected for their outstanding contributions to and application of scientific research. Academy President Suzanne Cory congratulated all of the new Fellows for their stellar achievements and contributions to advancing the sum of human knowledge.

A Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science has been awarded one of the world’s most esteemed medical research prizes.

Professor Marc Feldmann, FRS FAA, is among eight winners of this year’s Canada Gairdner International Awards which recognises some of the most significant medical discoveries from around the world.

Professor Feldman shares his award for the discovery of a new kind of therapy for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis with Sir Ravinder Nath Maini, FRS FMedSci FRCP. He will receive a research prize of CDN $100 000 (AUD $97 732).

Scientists, environmental managers, students, policy makers and others gathered in Canberra today for the final in a national series of consultative meetings to develop a new long term plan for ecosystem science in Australia.

The Academy’s award-winning primary school science education program, Primary Connections, has launched its new website. The site’s improved features for teachers include online registration for training and curriculum resource samples.

An interview with Professor Robert (Bob) Crompton AM FAA in conversation with Professor Erich Weigold was recently posted to the Academy website.

Crompton's early interests in building electric gramophones, clocks and motors to power his toys helped to develop his early interests in science. After reaching top of the school in physics and securing a coveted cadetship at The University of Adelaide, Crompton went on to become a world renowned researcher in the world of electron swarm physics.

The Australian Academy of Science has warned that a declining scientific effort is weakening Australia’s claim to Antarctic territory and its strategic position in the region.

In a submission to the Australian government’s 20 Year Australian Antarctic Strategic Plan the Academy states our Antarctic research is 'chronically underinvested' and Australia’s current access arrangements to the territory and the sub-Antarctic islands are 'woefully inadequate'.

The creator of one of Australia’s best-remembered high school text books, Professor Harry Messel AC CBE, has been awarded one of the Australian Academy of Science’s highest honours, the Academy Medal.

The physicist and long-time science advocate has been awarded the Medal in recognition of his 'conspicuous and enduring service' to the cause of science in Australia.

The Australian Academy of Science’s Primary Connections education program recently held the first of its syllabus implementation workshops in Sydney.

The workshops are designed to familiarise teachers with Primary Connections’ new Kindergarten to Year 6 Science and Technology syllabus for NSW and demonstrate how Primary Connections can be used to meet their teaching needs.

The workshop was presented by Sophia McLean, Professional Learning Manager, and Louise Rostron, Professional Learning Consultant, with 36 primary educators attending.

A renowned UK scientist was today announced as a Corresponding Member of the Australian Academy of Science.
