Academy’s 2024 awards and funding opportunities now open

The Australian Academy of Science offers two types of opportunities for scientists. Our honorific awards recognise outstanding contributions to the advancement of science at the early, mid and career levels. Our funding opportunities support scientists to undertake research projects as well as travel and lectures at a national and international level.

Nominations for the Academy's honorific awards for scientific excellence close 1 May 2023.

Applications for research awards, travelling fellowships and research conference funding close 1 June 2023.

Global Science and Technology Diplomacy Fund – Strategic Element

The Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering (ATSE), in collaboration with the Australian Academy of Science, will deliver the Australian Government’s $18.2 million Global Science and Technology Diplomacy Fund – Strategic Element, a key part of the new $60.2 million GSTDF fund.

Over the next four years, the fund will support international collaboration to enhance Australia’s profile in science and technology research and application. Australian business, entrepreneurs and researchers can capitalise on international opportunities to commercialise their cutting-edge products and services and strengthen scientific collaborations.

L'Oréal-UNESCO For Women in Science Australia & New Zealand Fellowships

The Fellowships are intended to provide practical help for the winners to undertake a one-year research project in their chosen fields. Winners may choose to spend their funding on buying scientific equipment, paying for child care costs, conference & travel costs or other items they may need to continue their research - four Australian Fellowships and one New Zealand Fellowship valued at $25,000

Mathematics Breakthrough Prize

The Breakthrough Prize in Mathematics is given annually to an individual making significant accomplishments in mathematics – $3 million.

The New Horizons in Mathematics Prize is designated for early-career researchers – $100,000.

The Maryam Mirzakhani New Frontiers Prize will be presented to women mathematicians who have completed their PhDs within the past two years – $50,000.

Fundamental Physics Breakthrough Prize

The Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics is given annually for accomplishments in fundamental physics broadly defined, including advances in closely related fields with deep connections to physics – $3 million.

The New Horizons Prize is designated for junior researchers – $100,000.

Life Sciences Breakthrough Prize

Tall Poppy Science Awards

The awards were created to recognise and celebrate Australian intellectual and scientific excellence and to encourage younger Australians to follow in the footsteps of our outstanding achievers. Nominees must have graduated with their PhD between three and ten years of the nomination closing date.

The Jian Zhou Medal

The Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences Jian Zhou Medal is awarded annually to a rising star of Australian health and medical science who is making a significant impact in translational medical science, primarily working in Australia. The Medal is awarded at the Academy’s annual meeting each October and recipients receive financial support for their travel costs to enable them to attend.
