Risk analysis, nutrition, advanced fabrication and microbiomes were among the topics approved recently by the Royal Society (Australia) Pty Ltd (RSA) Board for a three-year forward program of Theo Murphy events. The topics were chosen by the Academy’s Executive Committee from suggestions provided by Fellows, the National Committees for Science and the EMCR Forum.

The Royal Society of London initiated the holding of the first Commonwealth Science Conference in 47 years in Bangalore, India from 25‒28 November.

Ms Amy Loughman has won a scholarship to visit the National Institute of Mental Health at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the United States next year.

Links between research and industry in Taiwan and Australia, and the promotion of science in the general community, were the subject of a visit by a Taiwanese delegation in October.

Science education, support for early career researchers, and priority areas for Thailand such as food and energy security, health and the environment were the main focus of a meeting between the Academy and the Royal Institute of Thailand in October.

The President of the Helmholtz Association of Germany, Professor Jürgen Mlynek, made a visit to the Academy while in Australia recently. He was accompanied by directors of several Helmholtz Centres.

Scientific advances that could make a significant impact were the focus of a group of young Indonesian scientists who visited Australia in November.

Eight researchers from Australia have been awarded Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) Invitation Fellowships for Foreign Researchers. The researchers, including specialists in human movement and sport science, biochemistry and cell biology, and communications technologies come from research institutions and universities around Australia. They will travel to Japan in the next few months to conduct cooperative research in universities and research institutions around Japan, and will also attend seminars and give lectures. The researchers were selected by the Academy.

Five eminent Australian scientists and five prominent Australian business people were appointed to the Prime Minister’s new high-level science advisory body, the Commonwealth Science Council, in October.
