Shelley Peers, the Director of PrimaryConnections, the Australian Academy of Science’s primary science education program, won the Australian Innovation Challenge award for education last night.

The awards, run by The Australian in association with Shell and with support from the Australian Government, aim to drive innovation breakthroughs to commercialisation or adoption.

The Australian Academy of Science today announced the 2013 winners of its prestigious annual awards for scientific excellence.

Honorific awards are presented to career researchers for life-long achievements and to outstanding early-career researchers under the age of 40. In addition, the Academy gives a number of awards for research and travel support. In 2013, the Academy will give more than $127,000 in awards, travel and research support.

The Australian Academy of Science today welcomed a commitment by Tony Abbott and Peter Dutton to protect the nation’s health and medical research budget.

“Australia has a long and proud record of world-changing health and medical research but there remain areas of high community need, such as age-related illness, mental health and Indigenous health,” said Academy President, Professor Suzanne Cory. 

Understanding cell death is the key to treating many types of cancer, according to Professor Suzanne Cory, President of the Australian Academy of Science and internationally recognised cancer researcher. In an Australian Academy of Science public lecture tomorrow, entitled Harnessing death for life, Professor Cory will describe how detailed knowledge about the molecular circuitry regulating the cellular life/death switch is leading to an exciting new class of drugs to treat cancer.

The Australian Academy of Science and the National Museum of Australia are joining together to award outstanding original research by university students in Australian science history or Australian environmental history.

The Australian Academy of Science today welcomed the appointment of Chris Bowen as the new Minister for Science and Research. Mr Bowen is known as a Federal MP with a history of commitment to science and research.

Mr Bowen assumed responsibility for Tertiary Education, Skills, Science and Research after the resignation of Senator Chris Evans.

Professor Kurt Lambeck will today be awarded the Legion of Honour - the highest decoration in France - in recognition of his contribution to the field of science and his strong ties to the country.

His Excellency the Ambassador of France, Mr Stéphane Romatet, will confer the Award of Chevalier dans l’Ordre National de la Légion d’Honneur tonight at the Australian Academy of Science’s Shine Dome in Canberra.
