What will Australian ecosystem science look like in 10 years? That's the big question being considered in the development of a long-term plan for ecosystem science in Australia.

In the coming months, there will be a series of town hall workshops across the country to discuss, develop and refine proposals for strengthening the future of Australian ecosystem science.

The Australian Academy of Science’s National Committee for Astronomy is marching ahead with its plan to guide the future of Australian astronomy for the next 10 years.

The Australian Academy of Science invites applications from Australian early-career researchers for the France-Australia Science Innovation Collaboration (FASIC) program Early Career Fellowships for 2014.

The grants are for researchers in any field of:

Nominations are now open for the 2015 Australian Academy of Science awards, including two new awards to honour scientific excellence.

Researchers are invited to apply for the first John Booker Medal for engineering science and the inaugural Thomas Davies Research Fund awards for marine, soil and plant biology research - as well as the recently created Nancy Millis Medal for women in science.

The Academy’s awards recognise both early career and lifetime achievements, and range from medals and lectures to travelling fellowships, research grants and conference support.

Australia could be the first country to develop a bionic brain, according to a new report calling for a national investment in brain research.

The Inspiring smarter brain research in Australia report, to be launched on Tuesday by Health Minister Peter Dutton, contains recommendations from a High Flyers Think Tank hosted by the Australian Academy of Science in Melbourne last year.

Expressions of interest are invited from junior scientists (30 years of age or under) to visit the National Institutes of Health in the US. Proposals in any health-related field of natural science will be considered. Only Australian citizens and permanent residents living in Australia are eligible to apply. At time of applications, applicants should be either in the first two years of a PhD degree or equivalent, have completed a Masters or a Bachelors with Honours degree, be in the final year of a Masters or a Bachelors with Honours degree.

The Australian Academy of Science has advised that a planned trial of cattle grazing in Victoria's Alpine National Park is 'scientifically flawed' and should not proceed, in a submission to the Victorian government.

The Academy submission, which was compiled and reviewed by experts in biodiversity and environmental science, states the trial should not go ahead as it will likely to have 'unacceptable adverse impacts' on national heritage and threatened species.

As part of International Women's Day celebrations, the Australian Academy of Science has announced the winner of the inaugural Nancy Millis Medal for Women in Science.

Professor Emma Johnston will receive the award for her leadership and ground-breaking research in marine ecology. Professor Johnston is an Australian Research Council Fellow at the University of New South Wales and the inaugural Director of the Sydney Harbour Research Program at the Sydney Institute of Marine Science.

Twenty-two of the Australian Academy of Science’s National Committee Chairs, along with representatives of the Academy’s executive, met in Melbourne today to discuss the work of the committees in promoting and setting the strategic direction of their discipline.

The National Committees are representative bodies that help shape their fields and serve as a link between Australian scientists and overseas scientists in the same discipline.
