Registrations are now open for the third Earth System Science outlook conference being held at the Australian Academy of Science in December.

The Cities in Future Earth conference (Shine Dome, 8-9 December) will gather together leading thinkers to examine the environmental, economic and social issues surrounding urbanisation.

Australian Academy of Science Fellow Professor Terry Speed was awarded the CSIRO Eureka Prize for Leadership in Science yesterday.

At the Australian Museum Eureka Prizes awards dinner last night in Sydney, Professor Speed received the award for his leadership in the field of bioinformatics—data analysis which is vital for cancer research.

A total of 15 prizes were given at the annual awards for outstanding contributions to Australian science.

A recently appointed Japanese diplomat has visited the Academy to discuss the Academy's activities with Japan. Mr Yoshihide Miwa, First Secretary at the Embassy of Japan in Australia, was particularly interested in programs involving the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). Mr Miwa was accompanied by Mr Hioki Tajima, also from the Embassy and Dr James Llewellyn from the Australian Government Department of Education.

Two hundred thousand dollars worth of educational resources were sent to schools in need in Vanuatu yesterday by the the Australian Academy of Science’s primary school science program, Primary Connections.

The Academy has briefed two of the UK's leading science policy advisers during a recent visit to Australia.

Academy Fellow and mathematician Professor Nalini Joshi has been awarded the London Mathematical Society Hardy Fellowship for 2015.

Named after former Soceity President G.H. Hardy, the Fellowship is awarded to a distinguished overseas mathematician and asks them to deliver the Hardy Lecture at the Society's annual meeting.

Normally the Fellowship is awarded in even numbered years but Professor Joshi has been awarded a special Fellowship in 2015 to coincide with the Society's 150th anniversary year.

A Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science, Professor Frances Separovic, has been elected as Secretary of the prestigious United States Biophysical Society.

The Biophysical Society, founded in 1956, is a professional, scientific society established to encourage development and dissemination of knowledge in biophysics.

Registrations are now open for a master class in science engagement and policy making being held at the Australian Academy of Science.

The master class, to be held on 5 December from 10 am to 4.30 pm, will provide a practical guide to engage the public, politicians and policymakers on science matters, based on the best academic research in this area.

This one-day class will feature scholars and successful practitioners working at the front line of science engagement to discuss practical approaches, research and future directions.

Two Fellows of the Australian Academy of Science have been awarded Laureate Fellowships by the Australian Research Council (ARC) to fund their research.

The Fellowships, announced today by the Minister for Education Christopher Pyne, provide project funding  to outstanding researchers as part of the ARC ‘s Discovery Program.

A member of the Australian Academy of Science’s National Committee for Antarctic Research has received a prestigious award ahead of an international meeting on Antarctic research.
