scienceXart Competition Terms and Conditions

1. Promoter

The competition is being run by the National Committee for Mathematical Sciences in collaboration with reSolve: Mathematics by Inquiry is a national program designed to promote relevant, rigorous and engaging mathematics from Foundation to Year 10, managed by the Australian Academy of Science and is funded by the Australian Government. The competition is supported by the Statistical Society of Australia.

2. Competition Dates

The competition will run from June 28, 2020 all entries must be received before September 25, 2020 at 5:00pm (AEST). No late entries will be considered and/or accepted.

3. Prize

Each Category will have a winner and a runner-up prize. These prizes are for the class/school of the student who submits the photograph selected for the prize.

There is no payout in cash. Prize must be collected in one transaction.

Prizes for the competition will be announced at a later date.

4. How to enter

Entries must be the original work of the entrants, they must not have won or been entered in any previous competitions or any other public display and they must not have been previously published in any form or in any other place in Australia.

Make sure is there is someone else in the photo you are submitting that you have the signed consent of their legal guardians.

Valid entries must:

1. Entrants must enter on the Academy website scienceXart submission page.
2. Entrants must include their image and a short description of the mathematics behind the image. This must be at most 240 characters in length. 
3. Entrants are limited to three entries.
4. Entries must come from students studying in Australian schools.

5. Evaluation and selection of winner

The winner of the competition will be judged by a selected panel involving staff of the Australian Academy of Science, coordinated by National Committee of Mathematical Sciences.

The judging panel will decide the winner based on the evaluation criteria below. The judges will review each submission as they deem appropriate. The judges’ decision is final.

The evaluation criteria are as follows:

1. Is the entry valid – have all components been fulfilled
2. Artistic quality of image.
3. Accuracy of Mathematical description.
4. Creativity.

Evaluation criteria for statistics prize:

1. Is the entry valid – have all components been fulfilled
2. Artistic quality of image.
3. Accuracy of Mathematical description.
4. Creativity.
5. statistics is featured predominantly in the photo.

6. How winners will be notified

Teachers of the winners will be notified by email. The winner will be notified via an announcement on the scienceXart webpage and the reSolve website.

7. Use of moderated entries

Selected entries will be used in reSolve resources. Selected entries may also be used in Academy social media

8. Method for claiming prize

The Academy will contact the teacher of the student with the winning submission to discuss prize claims.

9. Unclaimed prize

If the prize is unclaimed for a period of 30 days from time of the winner announcement, the winner forfeits their rights to the prize. The prize will be given to the runner up, as selected by the judges’ panel.

10. Purpose of collection of information

The Australian Academy of Science collects personal information only as part of the entry in order to conduct the competition.

By submitting an entry, entrants agree that the Australian Academy of Science may, for an indefinite period, unless otherwise advised, use the personal information collected from the entry for promotional, marketing and publicity purposes for the competition, for internet posts and/or for future communication activities by the Australian Academy of Science.
