Science at the Shine Dome 2016

May 24, 2016

Some of Australia’s most influential scientists are gathering for Science at the Shine Dome this week to welcome new Fellows to the Academy, celebrate the achievements of Australia’s best scientists, and share knowledge and ideas for the benefit of scientific research across the country.

Today, new Fellows will speak about their work at the Academy of Science, all elected for their achievements in their respective fields of physical and biological science. These men and women have been chosen as important contributors to advancing the sum of human knowledge in Australia, and will join a group of more than 500 Fellows across the country.

Amongst the 21 new Fellows elected are former Australian of the Year and mental health advocate Professor Patrick McGorry and Australia’s Chief Scientist Dr Alan Finkel. The fields from which these men and women have been chosen range from cancer research and advanced communications, to agriculture and mathematics. Read a full list of all our new Fellows.

Awards are also presented as part of Science at the Shine Dome in recognition of the lifetime achievements of a small number of extraordinary scientists, as well as early and mid-career researchers making significant contributions in their field of work. Awardees will make short presentations on their work tomorrow, and include researchers studying plant biology, solar energy, biodiversity, oceans and waves, immunology, astronomy, geology and the evolution of animals.

On Thursday, the final day of the event, leading researchers in bionics and new prosthetics will speak about their work and the latest innovations and discoveries in the field. Presentations at the Symposium, titled Human Plus+, will cover topics such as bionic hearts and lungs, 3D printing in medicine, the ethics behind bionics, and much more.

A livestream of Science at the Shine Dome will be available from 8:45am, and speeches will be shared online via the Academy’s Facebook and Twitter.

More information on the awardees, fellows and talk can be found at the Science at the Shine Dome events page.
