Professor David Buckingham was a distinguished physical and theoretical chemist. Born in Sydney, he completed a Bachelor of Science (with the University Medal) and Master of Science under Professor Raymond Le Fèvre at the University of Sydney. He completed his PhD at Cambridge, supervised by Professor John Pople. After many years at Oxford University as a student fellow and then lecturer, he was a professor at the University of Bristol and then Cambridge University.

Professor Buckingham was made a Corresponding Member of the Australian Academy of Science in 2008 for his seminal contributions to our knowledge of optical, electric and magnetic properties of molecules, intermolecular forces and chirality, and was an acknowledged world leader in these areas. He received numerous awards and was a Fellow of the Royal Society, a Foreign Associate of the United States National Academy of Sciences, a Foreign Member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, and a Member of the International Academy of Quantum Molecular Science. Professor Buckingham maintained strong connections with Australia through a stream of Australian research students and postdoctoral associates, and made frequent visits.
