With climate change and a growing urban population, what will our future cities look like? And how should we shape cities to better deal with our changing planet? These are just some of the big questions being discussed at a two-day conference being held at the Australian Academy of Science.

The Academy's Foreign Secretary, Professor Cheryl Praeger, has become the first woman to win the Australian Mathematical Society's prestigious George Szekeres Medal for an outstanding lifetime contribution to mathematics.

Professor Praeger was the second woman in Australia to become a Professor of Mathematics. She has built an exceptional career in group theory and combinatorics, and has spent many years advocating for international collaboration, and working with international leaders in statistics and mathematics.

The Academy of Science today formally admitted the President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences as a Corresponding Member.

A pioneer in the field of nanoscience, Professor Chunli Bai was elected last year and formally admitted when he signed the Academy’s Charter Book at a ceremony in Canberra today.

He joins 27 Corresponding Members – all of whom are leading international researchers and science advocates with strong links with Australia.

While in Australia, Professor Bai has also received an honorary doctorate from the Australian National University.

Australia's bionic ear pioneer, Professor Graeme Clark AC FAA, has become the first Australian to receive the prestigious 2015 Russ Prize for bioengineering that significantly improves the human condition.

Primary Connections, the Academy's primary school program which links science with literacy, is releasing a suite of new curriculum units and interactive teaching resources.

Three new units will cover science material suitable from foundation to Year 4 and will include a free downloadable PDF, assessment rubrics and new and improved introductory sections.

Registrations are now open for Science at the Shine Dome 2015, the Academy's annual flagship event. With the theme 'Minerals to medicines: 100 years of X-ray crystallography', the Symposium celebrates the huge and growing impact of crystallography.

Two Academy Fellows have been appointed to a technical advisory forum to review and provide advice on Australia’s official temperature data set.

Professor Terry Speed and Emeritus Professor Bob Vincent were among eight leading scientists chosen for the new forum, announced yesterday by the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for the Environment, Bob Baldwin.

Registrations for the Academy's biennial national meeting for early- and mid-career researchers, Science Pathways, is now open.

Science Pathways 2015 will explore the best ways for early- and mid-career researchers to effectively communicate their scientific research to the wider community. The event will bring together researchers, senior scientists and representatives from industry and government.

Up to 200 delegates from around Australia and neighbouring countries are expected to attend the two-day meeting.

The Academy is calling for nominations for next year’s prestigious honorific awards for scientific excellence.

The 2016 awards are open to career and early- and mid-career researchers, and recognise scientific excellence across a range of disciplines in the physical and biological sciences.

Past winners of honorific awards include Nobel Laureate Professor Brian Schmidt and bionic ear inventor Professor Graeme Clark.

The closing date for awards nominations is 30 April 2015.
