The Australian Academy of Science joined with other academies from around the world to call for government and medical practitioner action to address the growing problem of antimicrobial resistance.
IAP - The Global Network of Science Academies, and the InterAcademy Medical Panel (IAMP) issued a joint statement, ‘Antimicrobial resistance: a call for action’.
As a result of the Academy’s long-standing relationship with the Council for the Lindau National Laureate Meetings, Australia has been invited to host the International Day at the 64th Lindau Nobel Laureates Meetings in Germany on 30 June. The International Day offers an exceptional educational, research and science diplomacy opportunity for Australia to display its achievements on the world stage.
President of The Royal Society, Sir Paul Nurse, visited Australia in March to deliver the 2014 David Rivett Memorial Lecture at the CSIRO Discovery Centre, Canberra.

The United Nations has designated 2014 as the International Year of Crystallography (IYCr) to celebrate approximately 100 years since the fundamental discoveries of Professor Max von Laue and father and son Nobel Laureates, Professor Sir William Bragg OM KBE PRS and Professor Sir Lawrence Bragg CH OBE MC FRS, gave rise to the modern discipline of X-ray crystallography.

John Warcup Cornforth AC FAA FRS Nobel Laureate was born in Sydney, the second of four children to British-born parents John Warcup Cornforth and Hilda Eipper. Cornforth began to lose hearing at just 10 years old; later diagnosed with otosclerosis, he was profoundly deaf by the age of 20.
