2015 Academy awards announced

The 2015 Academy awards have been announced, including three new awards which celebrate the careers of eminent biologists Sir Gus Nossal and Professor Jacques Miller, and engineer Professor John Booker.

The winners of these new awards have undertaken pioneering research developing treatments for malaria, devising new drugs to treat obesity and making cheaper and more efficient solar cells.

2015 public speaker series: Science fiction becomes science fact

The work of scientists has long been fuelled by the imagination of writers: lasers, robots, rocket ships and atomic power were all described in fiction long before they became a reality. Today, the frontiers of science continue to be inspired by ideas that were first explored in science fiction.

Small schools, big schools, city, rural and isolated schools: Science by Doing units are on the march if website activity and school feedback is a good indicator.

The Science by Doing website was launched one year ago. By October this year it had recorded 1.47 million hits. The table shows the number of hits for the middle month of each term since the website went live. This is a more reliable indicator of the active use of Science by Doing resources.

The Academy’s popular online science information site, Nova: Science in the news, is being completely redeveloped thanks to a generous donation from Telstra.

Telstra has committed $1 million over three years to Nova, enabling the Academy to redesign the site based on user research and present topics in new and engaging ways.

The Academy thanks the following people and organisations who have generously supported our fundraising campaigns over the past four months.
