Some of Australia’s and China’s leading experts on advanced materials met recently in Ningbo, China to share the latest research on materials sciences. The China–Australia symposium on advanced materials was the 12th in a series of annual scientific symposiums jointly organised in collaboration with the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering (ATSE). Scientists from both countries discussed their research with the aim of a better and clearer understanding of the interests and capabilities of both sides in materials sciences. Scientific presentations focused on three main topics:

  • Advanced materials fundamentals
  • Advanced materials research
  • Advanced materials industrial applications

The Australia-China Science Academies Symposia Series is one of three elements that make up the Australia–China Science and Research Fund (ACSRF). The ACSRF is jointly managed by the Australian Government Department of Industry, Innovation and Science and the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology and its objective is to facilitate stronger collaborative ties between the two countries. This symposium was also supported by the Australian Government Department of Education and Training.

Professor Rose Amal FAA FTSE and Professor Murray Scott FTSE were the steering committee members on the Australian side and ably selected the Australian speakers. Professor Scott attended the symposium to deliver a presentation and convene one of the sessions.

The Australian academies were represented by their presidents, Professor Andrew Holmes and Professor Peter Gray (ATSE) and CAS was represented by Vice President Tan Tieniu. In addition, the Australian Government was represented by Sean Starmer, Counsellor (Science and Industry) from the Australian Embassy in Beijing.

To conclude the symposium, the Australian delegation took part in a site visit program to the Ningbo Institute of Industrial Technology (CNITECH), CAS. Since the symposium and as a result of this visit, a joint follow up activity between Swinburne University of Technology and CNITECH has emerged. It is envisaged that the activity will include a joint research student supervision program and a joint research centre, led on the Australian side by Professor Alan Lau.

The next symposium in this annual series will be held in Australia and will focus on the topic of synthetic biology.
